Why is the World Against Child Labour Day Significant For All?

World Against Child Labour Day is celebrated every year on June 12. Declared as a controlled holiday by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Against Child Labour Day was first celebrated in the year 2002. Today, India accounts for as many as 90 lacs approx. (9 million)  of the world’s child labour population.

RTIwala Trending:   If children are the future, child labour is the darkness that follows. At a time when the world is advancing in every possible way, the hard fact lies in its utter inability to put an end to it altogether. However, the good news is that there’s a gradual decline in the statistics around the world against child labour. The need to stop child labour and provide children with the prerequisite for a safe environment and a secure future had been globally recognized but there’s a long way to go ahead of us. In countries on the lower side of development, 1 in every 4 children is engaged in child labour. This alone means the path to a better economy and society are dimmed with lack of education and growth for its children.

“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.”
                                             — Nelson Mandela

In India, there has been a no. of reforms in the laws to bring child labour down but a lot remains to be implemented.  Today, as we mark the 16 years of celebrating the World Against Child Labour Day, let’s take a look at the many facets of child labour in India and the world.

  3. In India, 1 out of every 11 children is a child labourer, reports ActionAid India.

The Daily Plight of Child Labour in India

Most of the child labourers put in a  massive 21 hours per day at work, which is more than enough to lead to a steady deterioration in their physical and mental health. In India, almost 10% of the total population facing child labour, work in family enterprises. However, the law restricts engaging children below 14 years of age to be engaged in such enterprises. The violation of these terms by an employer can lead to a jail term or even closure of his/her business. The same applies to the employers belonging to the entertainment industry as well.

Where do the highest percentage of Child Labourers belong to?

Globally, there are approximately 150 millions of child labourers. And a majority of them belong to the African and South-Asian regions. Countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mexico, etc.  Most of these children work for industries that deal in glass manufacturing, tobacco production, carpet weaving, brass manufacturing, matchbox manufacturing, lock manufacturing and coal mining.

In India, a majority of child labourers belong to the states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan & Maharashtra. Given that these states have shown potential growth over the years, it is surprising to see them still fall flat on the issue of child labour.  Astonishingly, one of the biggest banes created by child labour is the massive no. of children being trafficked for some or the other purpose across the world. In fact, there are approximately 1.5 million children being trafficked around the world. It’s time everyone joins the massive movement against child labour and child trafficking.

Top 5 Unknown Facts: World Press Freedom Day 2018

World Press Freedom Day or World Press Day is celebrated around the world on May 3 every year. The freedom of the press was declared as a necessity by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) back in the year 1993. Today, on May 3, 2018, World Press Day celebrates its 25th year of coming into existence.

“In the case of news, we should always wait for the sacrament of confirmation.”

                                                                                                                                  -Voltaire

RTIwala Reveals: In the last 5 years, journalism and freedom of the press have apparently hit a new low. Be it about fake news stories or an appalling no. of deaths of journalists under suspicious circumstances, the very credibility of the Indian media is depleting at an alarming rate. With the mainstream media publishing columns veiled in clickbait, independent journalism is undoubtedly the need of the hour. But what’s even more necessary is to ensure a safer haven for the press.

Media, being the fourth pillar of a democracy, is the key element behind one’s freedom of expression. The expression of one’s opinion is based out of knowledge, which in turn, originates from the information one gathers from various sources. Hence, protecting media persons or journalists is of great importance for any country that intends to strike a favorable socio-political balance and otherwise.

Today, as we ring in 25 years of celebrating the World Press Day, here a few surprising realities that you had never known before.

The worst year for the Freedom of Press

According to reports published by the Committee to Protect Journalists or CPJ, the year 2015 was the worst for the freedom of press across the world. With the murder of as many as 135 journalists and 199 of them being jailed, the freedom of press faced a mighty jeopardy during the period.

Countries with the biggest threat to the Freedom of Press

As per reports, Mexico, Honduras, and Argentina suffer from the biggest threats to one’s freedom of expression. A steep upward trend in the number of murders and jail terms for journalists has only been detrimental to the freedom of the press in these countries.

What does Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration on Human Rights mean for the World Press Day?

A harbinger of freedom of the press, the article states that everyone “has the right to freedom of opinion and expression, this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to see, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

Haymarket Affair: The revolution behind Labour Day celebration

Back in 1886 on this day, the labour unions in the U.S.A. called for a worldwide strike. Their demand was an 8-hour per day of working hours. Call it insane if you want to, but a labour’s working hours are primarily decided by his employer. That means, the working class was subjected to immense suppression and in turn, exploitation by all possible standards. Nothing called a Standard of Living Index or Happiness Index existed back in the day, after all. The strike was followed by a bomb blast in Chicago’s Haymarket Square on the 4th of May and massive violence inflicted on the labour class. The unfortunate incident was later termed as the ‘Haymarket Affair’ in history. May 1 was marked as International Labour Day (May Day) in 1923 as a mark of respect towards the Haymarket Affair.

During her conversation with People Matters, Dr. Gayathri Vasudevan, Co-Founder & CEO, LabourNet Services, said “labour Day, historically was earmarked as the day when a number of decisions were made in favour of workers, provisions for 8-hour work with decent wages, social security and time off from work in the form of leave. However, these benefits are still not available to workers in the informal sector even today.”
